Central Catholic
by: Beth Collins, 8th grade
Volunteering is a great way to spend free time and help the community. According to JoEllen Crotzer, a volunteer in the Central Catholic Kindergarten room, it is a gratifying way to spend your time.
JoEllen Crotzer grew up on the south-side of Indy. When she was a child, she attend St. Catherine's grade school and was familiar with St. James Church. (Central Catholic sits on the campus of the former St. James Church and brings together the former schools of St. Catherine, St. James, St. Patrick, and Sacred Heart as well as Good Shepherd Parish.)
JoEllen is a nurse and prior to volunteering at Central Catholic she volunteered at a free health clinic. She said the reason for her volunteering at Central Catholic was that she likes to help people and needed something to do.
She began volunteering at Central Catholic in 2017. She noticed that there weren’t very many volunteers and asked if she could volunteer at the school more. Now she volunteers on Friday mornings with the kindergarten class.
Mrs. Springman, the kindergarten teacher, says that having JoEllen in the classroom is something the children look forward to each week. JoEllen works with small groups, reads to the children, and helps around the classroom. Mrs. Springman is grateful for her service and thanks God that Mrs. Crotzer can provide this service to the children at Central Catholic.
Holy Cross
We are grateful for a partnership with Samaritan's Feet who fit Holy Cross students with a new pair of socks and shoes. Community volunteers served our children by washing the children's feet like Jesus.
