From Holy Angels Principal, Justin Armitage
The theme for the 2021-2022 school year at Holy Angels is Cultivating Community. Our 4th grade Unique Roots class has focused on ways we can cultivate our community and other communities throughout our country and world.
In November, the 4th grade organized a “Green Team” to implement several environmental initiatives around the school. Their efforts led Holy Angels to win the Indiana Thriving Schools Challenge Award. Holy Angels is one of only three schools in the state to receive this award four years in a row. On February 10, 2022, the 4th grade was invited to the Indiana State Museum to be recognized for this award by Mayor Joe Hogsett. The efforts of the 4th grade will help the entire Holy Angels community continue our recycling and gardening projects.
In January, the 4th graders learned of a devastating fire at an apartment complex in the Bronx, New York. A close friend of Holy Angels, Mr. Stephen Ritz, founder of the Green Bronx Machine, knew of many individuals impacted by the tragedy. In Unique Roots class, the scholars read about the fire, discussed the tragedy, and brainstormed ways we could help that community. The scholars decided to create cards for those impacted by the fires and sent them to Mr. Ritz. He sent the scholars back a heartfelt, “Thank you,” video.
In February, we had a guest speaker, Fr. Tiago, educate the scholars about a village in Mozambique, Africa, that has no electricity or running water. Fr. Tiago explained how villagers must walk 5-10 miles just to find a water source. He also discussed how he has started a project to supply the village with a water pump. Scholars learned what a valuable resource this water pump would be to the villagers and have decided to help raise money for the implementation of this pump over the season of Lent. If anyone would like more information about the water pump project, please contact Ms. Guynn at 317-926-5211. Thank you for helping our scholars learn about ways to cultivate community here and abroad.
