From Holy Cross Principal, Cara Swinefurth
Holy Cross Central School is grateful to be the recipient of a mini-grant from the Archdiocesan Creation Care Ministry. This grant is allowing HCC School to maximize students’ experience in the outdoor space during the school day. The grant application was written by Holy Cross 8th Grade students as part of their Language Arts writing instruction. The students requested funds to help enhance the learning garden at the school. The garden is an active area already, featuring a thriving garden and the Stations of the Cross. Lettuce, spinach, tomatoes, jalapenos, basil and cilantro were planted and harvested in the central garden beds. These vegetables have been used in salads that were served to the students and staff during lunch. Marigolds from the garden were used in classroom Día de Muertos (Day of the Dead) offerings.
As a result of the mini-grant, the garden will now include a Rosary Walk. The junior high students will create this prayer path using stones and additional plantings this spring. We look forward to all HCC students being able to pray the Rosary using the Rosary Walk prayer path!
