From Central Catholic Principal, Ruth Hurrle
Shelby Hale is the newest addition to the Central Catholic staff. His position is funded through a generous multi-year donation focused on social and emotional learning for the students in the MTCA/NDAA schools. Shelby spends his day working with targeted groups of students whose wholistic development requires special attention to social and emotional skills. He designs individual learning and behavior plans for them and teaches them coping skills as well as celebrates their academic and social successes. In addition, he teaches a well-known social/emotional curriculum called Friendzy across all grades once a week. The younger students call Mr. Hale the "feelings teacher," and the older students call him, "Mr. H." Shelby shares that many students call him, "Mr. H" because they are afraid of "saying a bad word" by calling him "Mr. H-E- double hockey sticks." Because he spends so much time in the first grade, Shelby has learned that his name has a "long a and a magic e" so students can pronounce his name phonetically and don't need to call him "Mr. H" anymore!
In the few short weeks that Mr. Hale has been a part of the CCS team, he has become a valued team member who is serving our most vulnerable students in impressive ways, while at the same time building the capability of all students with his whole group instruction. We are definitely indebted to our donors for the gift of Shelby's position and their multi-year commitment to the social and emotional health and growth of our students.
